What is a DOI?
Q: What is a DOI?
A: DOI stands for 'Digital Object Identifier'. DOI numbers uniquly identify online articles. For more information on the organization and index of all DOI's, see the link below.
Q: What does a DOI look like?
A: DOI 10.1000/182
or simply
10.1000/182
Q: Where do I find my article's DOI?
A: First look in the citation information. It might be right there. Next, look at the copyright notice page that appears when you open a fulltext article. Another good place to look is right next to the copyright information on the first page of the article (print or pdf). If it is not there, then you could try looking on the journal's website, then the citation for the artilce. It is sometimes there.
Q: Why don't all publisher's list DOI's?
A: Some places (such as PubMed and the NIH) have their own established system (nlm id numbers). For others, this is a new change brought about by the July 2009 release of the 6th ed. of the APA Handbook.
Q: What do I do if there isn't a DOI number?
A: Follow the 6th ed. APA guidelines and replace the DOI with the journal's homepage.

New Edition of APA!
Great news! The 6th Edition of the APA Publication Manual (2009) has arrived!
Please note that during the transition period between the 5th and 6th editions, many resources will still be based upon the 5th edition. Please be sure if you are using computer citation generators (like MS Word (tm) Reference, End Note, Citation Works, etc.) or other tipsheets and tutorials, that you need to review your finished product for 6th edition changes.
ESPECIALLY take note of the changes for citing and referencing electronic resources! !
